Is Geothermal Heating Right for You?

Last updated 2 months ago

Geothermal heating is a great way to reduce your impact on the environment and lower heating and cooling costs year-round. This innovative system works because the earth maintains a steady temperature that is cooler than the air temperature in summer but warmer in the winter. In the summer, a heat pump draws heat out of your home and dissipates it throughout the ground through tubes filled with water. In the winter, the system reverses: the pump draws heat from the ground into your home.

This method of heating and cooling is very efficient and uses little electricity, which saves you money. If you’re interested in geothermal heating, here is a list of signs it might be the right choice for your home.

  • You have a backyard. The network of tubes that makes geothermal heating possible requires some space. It is possible to place the tubes vertically under your home, but this requires more digging and can be very expensive.
  • Your home is well-insulated. Older homes don’t do well with geothermal heating, simply because they don’t hold the heat in very efficiently. If your home is newer or well-insulated, geothermal heating is a great choice and will keep your home at a very comfortable temperature, no matter the season.
  • You want to decrease your dependence on fossil fuels. Geothermal heating will lower your energy bills and save you money, and you’ll know that you’re doing your part to conserve natural resources.

Geothermal heating allows you to take advantage of the earth’s natural heat while saving money. If you’re interesting in replacing your current heating and cooling system with an efficient, money-saving geothermal heat pump, Rusk Heating & Cooling can help.
